United Nations Human Rights Council
About
The United Nations Human Rights Council will discuss the imprisonment of political dissidents is a global phenomenon in which those opposing the government or criticizing those in power can be imprisoned for speaking out. Oftentimes, these political prisoners are incarcerated for fabricated charges or are given unfair sentences not fitting the crime.
Our second topic area, extrajudicial killings, denotes executions of people by government authorities without any legitimate judicial proceedings. Extrajudicial killings are prevalent throughout the world in countries such as in Syria, Iraq, Bangladesh, the Philippines. There is also significant debate revolving around the United States’ use of drone strikes.
Delegates in the UNHRC will discuss one of these two pertinent topics and leave with an understanding of the pervasiveness of human rights abuses and the processes through which the United Nations can try to combat them.
