United Nations Special Political and Decolonization Committee

About

Nuclear technology has fundamentally reshaped global politics, security, and energy systems, serving as both a source of immense destruction and a potential solution to climate change. From the development of nuclear weapons and widespread testing programs to the expansion of nuclear energy, states have relied on this technology to pursue national security and economic growth. However, these benefits have not been distributed equally. Nuclear-armed states prioritize deterrence and stockpile maintenance, while non-nuclear states often advocate for disarmament and stricter regulation. At the same time, nuclear energy presents a critical dilemma: it offers a low-carbon alternative to fossil fuels, yet carries significant risks related to reactor safety, aging infrastructure, and long-term waste management.

Another challenge facing the world today are the use of Private Military Corporations in international conflicts. In an era in which many aspects are becoming  increasingly commercialized, the United Nations  must now turn to confront a centuries-old question  of the commercialization of war. While early uses of mercenaries occurred in Ancient Egypt,  Greece, and Carthage, the idea of outsourcing war  is by no means an outdated one. As we progress  into the twenty-first century, the line between a  mercenary and a legally contracted security officer  has become increasingly blurred. While the use of  mercenaries in war has been discussed extensively  by the United Nations, it is less clear whether  today’s private military corporations (PMC’s) fall  under such a definition.
